What is an AC Disconnect Box?

AC disconnect boxes, also referred to as disconnect switches or simply a disconnect, are required by National Electric Code 440 to “locate the disconnecting means within sight of, and readily accessible from, the air-conditioning or refrigerating equipment.” AC units can be dangerous to work on, and servicing them may require our technicians to shut off power to the disconnect box.

Due to the importance of having an accessible way to shut off the AC unit, disconnect boxes are usually installed prior to the AC unit being installed. Since the disconnect boxes are outdoors, they can susceptible to rusting. It is recommended to inspect for rust, corrosion, water damage, or any damage to the wiring. If you think you may need to replace the disconnect box or unsure, give us a call today.
